Last week I talked the upcoming release of iOS 7 and highlighted some of the features we can look forward to. Now, as promised, I want to focus on what exactly all these changes mean for the mobile developers and, really, any business with an iOS app.
First and foremost, businesses with iOS apps need to seriously consider what the release of this new version will mean for the app. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that a majority of the apps out there are optimized for iOS 5 and 6…iOS 7 is a whole new platform which means a whole new set of requirements to optimize your existing apps.
According to Andrey Gluschenko, Senior Software Developer at DataArt, “when I first saw the iOS 7 presentation, I immediately knew I’d want it to be the exclusive version for this operating system. My second thought was that it would be difficult to support an application that was supposed to work on both iOS 6 and iOS 7. The radical change in the design and new paradigms of interaction will force developers to rethink the existing versions of applications.”
Gluschenko supports what I mentioned above. Developers will have to think hard about which operating system to release new apps on and what added time and resources will be required to develop apps on multiple platforms.
“I like iOS 7, but with some reservations” says Anton Garkusha, Senior Software Developer/Software Architect at DataArt. “As a user, I don’t see dramatic innovations, and as a developer I believe there will be an increase in the overall workload. It is too costly to support all the existing versions (and cost is always one of the key factors in the mobile industry), so I think iOS 7 will eventually take over as the predominant OS for app development.”
