QA Automation, Agile And Onshore/Offshore Engagements

Agile methodologies first developed in the mid 1990s in response to the traditional inflexible, indolent, and inconsistent Waterfall model that failed to deliver in the increasingly dynamic environments. Agile, with its receptivity to change coupled with Continuous Delivery (CD) of the business value created a paradigm shift in the software development history.

At Astegic, Agile is ingrained deep into the work culture. Quick turnaround time, continuous engagement and streamlined QA processes form the core of Astegic’s Agile approaches. Nonetheless, implementation of Agile is no assurance to success.

Vipin Jain, Director, QA at Astegic has over 15 years of experience in the software QA and Testing space. With numerous QA projects under his belt and having had his work published in various journals, Vipin has recently written a case study, Agile & Startups – What can go wrong? reflecting how Agile, being a preferred approach, may prove to be a faux pas if not applied in its true sense. For this, Vipin has been invited to speak at Asia’s Greatest Agile Event- ‘Agile Asia Testing Days, being held in Bengaluru from March 01-03, 2017.

Agile being the ‘talk of the town’ has been adopted blindly by many organizations that are realistically at odds with the fundamentals that create the groundwork for Agile application.  Few such factors may be:

  • Lack of Experience with Agile methods: Teams with no experience in applying Agile practices may bring the entire project into trouble.
  • Company philosophy:  With traditional mindset, agile principles and values will prove to be a misfit. The resistance to change may hamper the success of the agile approach.
  • Unsupportive management:  Agile transformation may end up abruptly with the inability of the management to understand the agile approach required to share the enthusiasm for agile at the team level or the executive level.  
  • Grafting Agile into Waterfall processes: The approach may succeed but with half-hearted efforts, and more emphasis on traditional methodology, it is difficult to harness the real benefits of Agile.

Additionally, the usual Agile approaches, when executed, have their own applicability limitations.
